Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ August 13, 2017

The reading from the first Book of Kings recounts the prophet Elijah’s encounter with God. Much to his surprise, God did not come to him in the wind or the earthquake, rather God came in a tiny whispering sound. In the Gospel we hear that even Jesus needed to take time apart to be in God’s presence. Our lives are busy and noisy for lots of reasons. The scriptures today give an invitation to turn off our devices and sit quietly with God. Doing so, may be just what is needed to face the storms of life that come our way.
