October 27 ~ Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Pharisee in today’s gospel did not really go to pray; he went to inform God how good he was. The tax collector on the other hand prayed with humility, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” This parable tells us important things about prayer. When praying, don’t hold yourself above others, as the Pharisee did, instead pray with humility, see yourself like others – a sinner among sinners all in need of God’s mercy! Take time to pray this week, calling to mind the words of the psalmist: “The Lord hears the cry of the poor.”
