April 26 ~ The Third Sunday of Easter

Today’s gospel takes place on the Road to Emmaus, a road out of town. Two disciples very discouraged by Jesus’ death have an encounter with Christ that changed them forever. The passage is worth reading again – and again: “he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them ~ their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us…?’” Notice how their sadness and fear turned to joy in the breaking of the bread. Jesus is with us at every Mass in the breaking of the bread: Eucharist. Do you recognize him there? During this Year of the Eucharist, pray that your heart will “burn within” you each time you receive Jesus in Holy Communion.
